quentin tarantino’s types in his film posters (2003–2023)

this series is a representation of typefaces in quentin tarantino’s film posters. my research associates and i have also been working on a similar topic but only on title sequences in his films; so, this should not create a conflict of interest. an objective is to dig deeper into this sub-field of typeface selection.

and boy, this guy is crazy when it comes to typography. it looks like he has a premeditated plan to break all the rules in typography, just as his films have been breaking ground the style of filmmaking.

except for pulp fiction and jackie brown, the typefaces used in official posters and title sequences are always different. tarantino also has a tendency to use multiple typefaces in one place, which otherwise is one of the cardinal sins in visual design.

for this series, i have used seven shades of red for each film. the ideal hue for kill bill 1 and once upon a time in…america would have been either golden yellow (#ffd700) or cyber yellow (#ffd300), but the plan was to create a tarantinoan red shade that is energetic, overpowering as well as passionate as it is in all his films that have been released in the last two decades (2003–2023).
