1/3: 80 Manipuri Proverbs (Paorou) Based on Animals, Birds and Insects

This is a collection of Manipuri proverbs, based on animals, birds and insects, with simplistic meanings in Manipuri and translation in English. A first part of three-post series, you can check the links at the bottom to see the other two collections.

INTRODUCTION Language and culture are interlinked as much as climate and rain are. As far as a language is concerned, it is the most prominent marker of a culture. Nothing says “Uh! Culture!” as much as a language does. And in language, which is such a dynamic entity, with its style and form changing almost every generation, its proverbs, or praman-panthei, capture succinctly the values and ethos, philosophy, quirks and characteristics of not only the language itself but also of the people who speak it.

It is not different for Manipuri or Meiteilon. A Tibeto-Burman language, it is primarily spoken by the Meiteis who reside in Manipur, a few states in eastern India and neighbouring countries such as Burma and Bangladesh. The language has a profound waangulon, which can be describe as its philosophy, and a puwari, its history.

For nearly a century, the Manipuri language it has been going through a revival stage, particularly with its alphabets, known as the Meitei Mayek. Historical accounts show that it was completely abolished in the early 18th century with the imposition of Hinduism as the ‘national’ religion, during the reign of Garibniwaz a.k.a. Pamheiba. (Note: He was not a Muslim. In our hometown, we are over-secular regarding names and nomeclatures. In any locality, you can easily find a Jimmy or Johnson or Jasmine as easy as a thi, and they can be a Meitei, or a Meitei-Hindu and the least they can be is a Christian.)

The formal use of Meitei Mayek is even more recent. I completed high school in 2000 but never got the chance to learn it formally, because we had been using only Bengali script for writing. Now it has changed. Kids are learning the language so rest assured, the language is in safe hands.

You must have heard a proverb that haste makes waste. Quite contradictorily, time waits for no man. Check a graphics series on a list of contradictory proverbs:

  22. Hi,
This is really a nice blog by you. I really appreciate your efforts for this blog. Keep it up and keep posting such blogs.
There is one language which is most commonly used and that everyone knows after their mother tongue is English. English is one of the most spoken languages in the world. But it is seen that most of the people hesitate to speak English fluently as they didn’t get the necessary environment to learn english. This is because most of the people take English online tuition for class 5 to class 12 to learn to speak English.
